Waverly Hills Sanatorium Paranormal Activity

Waverly Hills Tuberculosis Sanatorium was constructed starting March 1924 and was opened for patients in October 1926. It was one of the most modern facilities for tuberculosis at that time.

Selman A. Walksman discovered an antibiotic in 1943 and it was administered to patients on November 20, 1944 with great results. In the mid-1950s tuberculosis was practically stopped in Louisville because of the antibiotic and Waverly Hills Sanatorium was closed in 1961.

The building was reopened in 1962 as the Woodhaven Geriatric Sanitarium. There were several reports about patient mistreatment through different unusual experiments such as electroshock therapy and bedsores. Due to reported improper patient care, Woodhaven was closed by a court order. The facility was permanently closed and all of their equipment was bid off.

A man in from Louisville bought the Waverly and the nearby property in 1996. The new owner planned to demolish the building to build a 150-foot tall statue of Jesus Christ and Christian meditation center to the adjacent area. All the buildings were successfully demolished except the main hospital and the laundry room because the National Historic Register came into the picture. The owner made a move to let the building prone to destruction such as opening the building to vandals and letting any people to smash out windows. He then began digging around the foundation of the building to destroy the foundation but he failed because it was a solid concrete and is fire proof. The owner finally gave up in 2001 and decided to sell the property to the present owners. The new owners are planning to restore the Waverly to its original structure.

There were reports of phantom children acting like playing hide and seek, doors banging, voices from nowhere, lights going on even without electricity in the building. Some people even witnessed a hearse loading and unloading coffins.

Several people also reported seeing a little boy with his ball playing on the third floor and seeing a woman from the building with wrist bleeding while screaming for help.

From October 2001, the current owners raise money for the restoration of the building by their “Haunted Hospital” attraction every year.
