Tower of London’s Famous Ghosts

The Tower of London was initially built in 1078 by William the Conqueror. It is situated near the river Thames, at the eastern part of London. It is then, continued by Henry II and Edward I who added additional structures of the tower. People who were living in the tower still refuse to detach themselves on the property.

Henry VI is reported appearing every year in the Wakefield Tower. He was murdered by the Duke of Gloucester at around 11 p.m. The duke later became King Richard II.

The most famous ghost in the tower is Anne Boleyn, who was the Queen of England and wife to Henry VIII. Her husband ordered her beheading after he was not happy with her anymore and with no option of a divorce. Boleyn is reported to frequently seen carrying her head at the Tower Green and in the Tower Chapel Royal.

Another queen who experienced misfortune was Lady Jane Grey who married at the age of 15 to Guilford Dudley. She was a queen for only 9 days before English people put Mary, Queen of England to her throne. Jane was then, isolated at the tower and was tortured to give up her religion and join the Catholic Church. She refused to become a member of the Catholic Church and in return she was executed on February 12, 1554 and announced that she would leave as a true Christian woman. She is reported appearing every year on the anniversary of her death.

Other famous ghosts at the tower are known as the “Two Princes.” They are brothers Edward and Richard who were imprisoned at the tower in 1495 and sons of King Edward IV. Their uncle became King Richard III at the time of their imprisonment. Few days later, the little princes, disappeared and soon after, their skeletons were recovered beneath a staircase of the White Tower in 1674.
